Thermoformed plastic multiple encased in an artist's box.

Associated with the major mid-century Group Zero, Enrico Castellani is best known for his relief paintings, which he made by fastening canvas over protruding nailheads. This strategy created variations in light, shade, and positive and negative space across the canvas. Inlaid patterns, tensile surfaces, and varied textures remained central to Castellani’s work as he experimented with different materials and colors throughout his career. He also produced partly ready-made installations and sculptures. Castellani’s pioneering spirit extended to his Galleria Azimut exhibition space and journal, Azimuth, which promoted avant-garde painting and variously featured works by artists including Robert Rauschenberg, Heinz Mack, Jean Tinguely, and Yves Klein. Castellani’s work has been exhibited at institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum, the Centre Pompidou, the Stedelijk Museum, and the Fondazione Prada, and has sold for seven figures on the secondary market. The artist represented Italy at the Venice Biennale in 1964, 1966, and 1984.
